Gastronomy
Those who want to spend a few days in peace without worrying about food and drink, may enjoy local dishes which are very excellent. Yellow peppers stuffed with rice or fried, roasted or fried egg-plants, "orecchiette" (home made pasta") served with meat souce and local sheep's milk cheese or with "sime di rape" (a kind of vegetables) as well as the well know mashed broad beans (Hercules's mythical food) with cooked or raw chicory. You can wash down your dishes with famous local wines of great classic renown, of Leporano, Pulsano, Sava, Manduria, Carosino and Grottaglie wich are well know as Aulon, Satyrion Luogovivo, Don Attilio, ecc. But the most delicious local specialities, are fish and shell-fish, cooked or raw, prepared in different ways. As regards local food, a particular reference is due to olive-oil, the chief ingredient in the already affirmed Mediterranean diet, which weath bread is integrant part of. We must also mention the also renowed hard corn "friselle". And then plenty of fresh fruit (plums, peaches, aricots, fioroni, pears, figs, cherries) produced into the local country. In this copiousness the "summer-automnqueen" stands out: the renowned local green and purple grapes widely well know. Many local restaurants are now famous for their delicious cooking, appreciated not only within the borders of out land, but also elesewhere.
Of course there are folkloristic and sports events such as the patron saint feasts, historical preocessions, underwater fishing competitions, water ski and beach volley tournaments. The most practised sports are those connected to the sea. The local tourist ports, well equipped for pleasure boats garaging, carry out an important role. |
