Avetrana
The territory of Avetrana, is wedged between the provinces of Brindisi and Lecce.
And neighbours west and south with the city of Manduria, north with Erichie and east with
San Pancrazio Salentino, Salice Salentino, Nardò and Porto Cesareo.
The territory is extended on 73.38 kmq with an altitude of approximately 50 m, above sea level
and is approximately 6 km from the Ionian Sea, although even with no pertinence.
Beyond the old yet fragile etymological interpretations, recent studies show that the name
comes from Terra Veturiana meaning "Veturian Land", or rather land, which belongs to
"Veturius", most likely sign of a Roman centurion.
The territory is rich of natural charachteristichs and landscape to be discovered and admired.
The whole Canal S.Martino, south of this territory, full of caves and numerous farmhouses are symbols
of feuds and farm life of one time, including the medieval castle of Modunato, at one time a hamlet.
It is very interesting to visit the old part of the town named "li caseddi", rich of
suggestive short and narrow lanes, with short houses, the Castle, the mills for grinding,
the barons mansion, the Main Church, Palazzo Torricelli, the tower which dates back to the nineteenth
century, the clock and the various chapels all invite you to go back in time.
